Cell Phone Forensics At Its Best

By Stephen Bennett

The recent news reports about the iPhone storing Wifi and cell phone tower information has made international headlines. This has given birth to conspiracy theories and warnings about Big Brother and the New World Order. But this is not news at all to any cell phone forensics investigator that has been examining iPhones over the past few years. In fact, this has been common knowledge.

The information is not tracking information per say. But it does record and stores the WIFI and mobile telephone tower data that the telephone or iPad has connected to during the devices various travels. Mobile telephones operate similarly to two-way radios. When you make a call, it is recorded by the carrier to show which towers your telephone has contacted or pinged and what time it was. This makes it very easy to trace a person's movement using their mobile telephone.

There are multiple antennas that track your telephone's signal because a single tower only covers a few square miles. However, mobile telephone forensics is made possible with the help of countless towers spread all over. As you move, your call travels and is handed over to the base station that receives the strongest signal from the telephone. This means that wherever you go, your signal can and will be tracked.

With the cooperation of the telcos, this information can provide a forensic investigator with the general location of the device at any given time. Even without the cooperation of the telcos or ISPs with some further digging, a determined investigator can probably dig up some serious clues to the devices whereabouts and recent travels.

To make mobile telephone forensics even easier, many telephones have become equipped with GPS chips. As long as it is turned on, this allows the carrier and anyone looking to attain evidence and records your exact location in real time.

Deleted text message retrieval is the best way to find out what's been going on and for how long. We all have sent a text message. We know that its time and date stamped. No matter what network you have cell coverage through, it can be tracked and traced.

But again we cannot lose focus on the wealth of data that can be recovered from the iPhone. Texts, pics, video, voice mail, calendar, notes, browser history. This is all vital and valuable data that can be recovered with the standard iPhone forensic data recovery. So we can't become myopic in our investigation and only focus on the latest hot topic in the news.

We have to use all of the tools in our tool kit to recover every last bit of data that is available from the device in question. Then use the subpoena process to obtain the telco ISP data or if that is not possible use old-fashioned leg work to make sense out of the data and put names, dates, and addresses to the numeric data recovered.
