A Guide On How To Connect A High End Speaker Wire

By Henry Thompson

Most of the shops selling speakers do not provide speaker wires along with the sound systems they sell to clients. The customers are therefore expected to have knowledge of the wires in the market and how they can be used. The right kind of a high end speaker wire is rated by how standard the thickness is and how well it fits into a system.

These wires can either come along with connectors or may have none at all. When there is need for an outdoor connection, it is necessary to purchase wires that are fitted to be buried directly into the ground. On the other hand, for the speakers that are to be located within the house ceiling or walls are required to be UL-rated and should be labelled either CL2 or CL3.

The thickness of a wire can be easily identified through understanding the American Wire Gauge number that is written on it. For example, the wires may range between twelve and eighteen gauge in thickness. A cable is considered thicker if it has a lower gauge number. There is less resistance to flow of current when the line is thicker.

Based on the functions that are to get handled, several sizes of wires are used during connection. Thicker lines are used in instances where the applications portray high power or to have long runs. Thinner lines with high gauge values are however used when the applications require shorter runs. This therefore eases work and is considered cost effective.

In order to identify the amount of cable that is needed for connection, a string should be used to measure the distance between the receiver and where the speakers are to be located. The string length is then measured and an extra length is added to ensure an easier connection. Furthermore, the extra length is to avoid problems that may result from any error that might occur.

The lines that are fixed within a wall when a connection is done contain either two or four conductors. When a four conductor is in use, only a single cable is required to join a receiver and a volume controller in a different room. A two conductor cable then connects this volume controller with the several speakers in that room. Four conductor cables also function well with stereo-input speakers.

Proper functioning of speakers is achieved when there is a perfect connection of negative and positive leads located within speakers and receivers. When the connection of the negative and positive leads is done badly, it results in production of poor sound quality. Bare strands often results to short circuiting which can be avoided by use of line strippers.

The terminals of the speaker wires are also a vital part that should not be ignored. Speakers contain two different terminals are known as spring clips and binding posts. The spring clips are the easiest to use since they accept both the pin connectors and the bare wires. However binding posts are better when there is need for a solid connection.
